Well y’all, I still be stuffed like the turkey we ate for Thanksgivin’ yesterday. Yeah, I’m late in sayin’ this, but from mine to y’alls, Happy Thanksgivin’. One of the thangs I be most grateful for is people steppin’ up to be vaccinated. Maybe this darn virus will disappear into the ether eventually.
A while ago I wrote about the improvements the Indonesian government is makin’ to the infrastructure, ‘specially in West Papua to make it more accessible to us touristy folks. I found an article that details quite a bit of what’s bein’ done, and I’m not just talkin’ about the Trans-Papua highway here. The government has invested funds in improvin’ airports ‘n sea ports too. I’ve travelled in Africa often ‘n lemme tell ya, some of the airports be needing serious upgrades.
Not many people know this, but aside from stunnin’ white beaches ‘n great places to eat, Sorong also be one of the economic hubs of Indonesia because of oil ‘n gas reserves.
I’ve also mentioned that eatin’ a pig be a big thang with the West Papuan tribes Dani ‘n Lani. The government implemented somethin’ called the UP4B plan, between 2011 ‘n 2014, which covered 7 key areas, including good security for pig farmin’, ‘n cattle farmin’ in different areas of Papua ‘n West Papua. They also made efforts to increase the livelihoods of the locals by assistin’ with capital for industries in farmin’, fishin’, forestry ‘n cottage industries for the processin’ of sago.
The government also looked at ways to improve the literacy ‘n education rate by offerin’free education through high school, but there still be a need for a small fee payable. Elementary ‘n middle school be free, which doesn’t happen in many countries of the world. Indigenous Papuans can also qualify for external collect attendance, or to attend police or military academies.
I touched on the improvements in the healthcare system in this post. There be some kinda joy knowin’ that if y’all sick, there be someone that’s trained to help out with the right diagnosis, treatment ‘n medication. Like the colleges, there be prospects for Papuans to even learn how to be a midwife or become full time general nurses.
Sure, a lotta places in the world offer stuff like this, but when ya consider the state of Indonesia as a whole twenty to thirty years ago, versus where it be today, there be great developments. I take my hat off to a third world country’s government that is doin’ its darndest to improvement the lives of its citizens, especially in an area that wasn’t always as popular with tourists, like say, Bali for example.
