Beachin’ ‘n Birdin’ in West Papua

Staying with the beautiful places in and around West Papua, I came along a place called Wayag. It be roughly about nineteen miles from Waigeo in Raja Ampat ‘n six miles from the equator. Yeah, sure there be much divin’ ‘n liveaboard activity in Raja Ampat, but y’all don’t need to be divers to enjoy Wayag.

If you wanna relax on the beach, be on the lookout for the Karst islands. Some brochures say them islands look like mushrooms sproutin’ from the ocean. One thang about Indonesia is that all the beaches be beautiful.

The island is uninhabited, so why not grab a couple of mates in Sorong for a five-hour speed boat ride to the island, splitting the cost, which is gonna be about $750, to do some snorkelin’ or trekkin’ up a high peak called Pindito, to see some of the most breathtakin’ scenery y’all see in your life.

Y’all know I wanna learn how to dive. So, when I’m in West Papua I’m gonna visit all the beautiful divin’ spots, including Eagle Rock in Wayag. There be spectacular coral reefs, spanning a huge area about 380,000 acres. It definitely sounds like a place to visit.

But…if y’all lookin’ for something different, I did come across Biak’s Bird ‘n Orchid Sanctuary which was established in the late eighties by the government to preserve the birds ‘n orchids indigenous to West Papua. I aint’ been able to find much information around the entrance fees, but it looks like there be a gratuity payable at the gates. That be an interestin’ concept – runnin’ an entire conservation initiative on the goodwill of the patrons. I be keen to see if it is as well-established ‘n cared for as the National Orchid Garden and Jorong Bird Park in Singapore which I visited way back in 2004.

For the real bird enthuasiasts among y’all, there even be five-day birdin’ trips available, that include accommodation, meals, water, car, park fees ‘n a lotta other stuff. These tours visit Biak ‘n another place called Numfour. I’ve only seen the name, so I’m gonna need to do more research on the area.

Biak ain’t a big touristy spot, but the bird park be one of the attractions that ranks on quite a lotta travel sites.

There still be a lotta places in ‘n around West Papua that I need to do some readin’ up on. I think after Turkey Day next week, I’ll be sharin’ things to do in Jayapura, which be the capital of Papua itself.

‘Til next week y’all, be safe, ‘n keep your eyes open for updated travel info. This pandemic has stuff changin’ almost as daily.
