Indonesia’s Social Security Administrative Body (BPJS) gave an award to West Papua Province for achieving National Health Insurance (JKN) participation of 99.07% of the population.
The West Papua Provincial Government demonstrated its commitment by providing health insurance to all its citizens through the National Health Insurance Program (JKN). They have achieved Universal Health Coverage (UHC) of 99.07%. This means that 1,150,186 of the total population of 1,161,028 in West Papua have become JKN participants.
The consistency of the West Papua Provincial Government to achieve success in JKN program has been shown since 2018 and still remains today. Director of Health Service Guarantee of the Healthcare and Social Security Agency (BPJS Kesehatan) Lily Kresnowati handed over the UHC Award Charter to Acting Governor of West Papua Paulus Waterpauw, last 5 December.
West Papua’s achievement even exceeds the target of the National Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMN) which is targeted at a minimum of 98% of the population covered by National Health Insurance (JKN) in 2024.
“West Papua is the fourth province in Indonesia after Aceh, DKI Jakarta, and Bengkulu. This UHC achievement is certainly not the final, we really need support from West Papua Provincial Government to maintain and increase the number of JKN membership so that the population is more protected by health insurance,” Lily said in a written statement, some time ago.
In addition, local government participation in improving health service facilities is needed. In the future, it is expected that treatment can be served in their respective areas and no more referrals to treatment outside West Papua are needed.
The Acting Governor of West Papua said that the achievement of UHC was due to the cooperation of all parties in supporting the national health insurance program. The certainty of comprehensive health insurance for the people has become a shared responsibility, especially the local government.
The West Papua Provincial Government continues to increase dissemination to people who are not yet covered by healthcare security . In particular, in areas far from urban areas, because they are considered not to have awareness of the importance of health insurance protection.
Through the West Papua Provincial Government’s UHC cooperation with BPJS Kesehatan, all West Papuans can receive health services. Beneficiaries can show their ID card to seek treatment at the community health center (puskesmas) or access the hospital emergency room in an emergency condition. It is guaranteed by BPJS Kesehatan according to applicable procedures.
In addition, a Memorandum of Understanding and Work Plan for the UHC JKN Program was also signed by the BPJS Kesehatan Deputy for the Papua and West Papua Regions and the West Papua Provincial Government.
“On behalf of the West Papua Provincial Government, I expect support from all parties including the heads of regencies/municipalities in the West Papua Province to make the national strategic program success, specifically in the health sector which requires monitored and guarded hard work and planning,” said Paulus.
For information, BPJS Kesehatan has also provided various information channels and complaint handling to improve dissemination efforts related to the JKN Program. The public can access BPJS Kesehatan Care Center 165, BPJS Kesehatan official social media, or access BPJS ONE officers at the hospital.
BPJS Kesehatan also continues to expand registration and membership administration channels including direct face-to-face service and non-face-to-face such as Administrative Services via WhatsApp (PANDAWA) 08118165165.
Participants can also access the JKN Mobile Application with various features so that it is easier for participants to access services. Currently, participants can also use Electronic identification card (KTP)/identification number (NIK) to access services at First Level Health Facilities (FKTP) and hospitals.
